tRaRaRec—turn up the unheard

The unheard should no longer go unnoticed. Powered by the three suns fueling tRaRaRec, everything hidden away is about to step out of the shadows with a major fanfare. We are shining our spotlight right onto the sweet spot. We are shifting the needle on conversations and vinyl records, so you can explore the space between one and zero, pastel white and neon black, minor keys and major chords.

Trara, here we become one!

the spirits are dancing

That is the beacon of light. That faint light of hope. It is what drives you. It keeps you hanging on. The beacon of light comes to you. The beacon of hope comes to you. You have it in you to see it. You have it in you to grab. I was there. I was alone. I faced uncertain death. I was alone in the dark. Think of your loved ones. Think of the ones dearest to you. They are the anchor. The beacon of light.

songs of the land

The elders speak of a time. A time not that long ago. When each family was free. Free to live. Free to travel. Free to harvest. Throughout the lands they did. Throughout the lands they knew. Intimately they knew these lands. They knew the rivers. They knew the lakes. They knew the families. Each tributary had a name. Big or small. Each was significant. Each was a favorite. Each and all.

three days he barked

Was it that simple? Jumping into the abyss. Into darkness. Darkness forever. Questions remain unanswered. Not knowing. Not understanding. In darkness we are. The ache eases with time. Time marches on for us. Time makes the ache distant. The ache becomes a memory. Not understanding. Not knowing is the hardest. Living day by day. Getting by day by day. Some say life has been predetermined by a greater force. Predestined they say.

Quietly he looked out the window. These words he uttered. The lands must be empty. And indeed they are today. The new generation. Remaining in flock. Corralled on reserve. Too accustomed to the new. The new way of life. Remain idle in the community. He had been one of the last to live free on the land. His life today is filled. Filled with memory. Both with sadness and joy. Quite often he reflects of a life lived to the fullest.

Like the embers of a dying fire, the charcoal remains. Ambient. Glowing gently. Dimmer at each passing moment. Soon to be ash. A passing of time. A passing of memory. Knowledge coming to pass. What remains is ourselves. The life we live. The legacy of our past passed on. Soon to be our legacy. What knowledge will we impart? What memory will be ours? What legacy is ours to depart for the children of our children?

A chance meeting between a Cree Chief and a Swiss historian at Toronto Airport is considered the initial spark for this project, as both of their connecting flights were delayed. Consequently, human and technical failure led to Metatawabin’s “reflections on human and nature in poetic form” reaching Europe, where the strict separation between nature and culture has notoriously led to far greater grievances than just airplanes not taking off on schedule. The resulting transatlantic collaboration in words and music encourages us to reflect on and rethink not only the brutal past—with its still clearly felt consequences today among former colonial rulers and the Indigenous peoples of North America—but also the fundamental relationship between nature and humanity. Alone or all one?
